The goal was to transform the primary governing body into a leadership Board of Trustees "comprised of diverse volunteers who are senior representatives of the largest, most influential donors and sponsors, noted intellectual, civic, moral leaders and other stakeholders" (Governance, 2010, The United Way). This was also designed to ensure that the governing body had a vested interest in upholding the charitable mission of the organization. Focusing on volunteers in choosing UW leadership promoted diversity and inclusiveness in the membership of the organization's governing board as well as in UW outreach activities.
Controlling
